A Grandmother's Joy
by Nikki Willhite

One of the greatest joys of my life is to see my children with
their families. I am so proud of them, and the way they have matured into
responsible adults, and loving parents.
I marvel at the happy families that they have created. In my
wildest dreams I could never have dreamt of having children with as many talents
and choice traits of character as I see in my children.
Now, it is happening all over again. This time, it is with my
grandchildren.
It can be very difficult for mothers when their children leave
home. They can feel an overwhelming sense of loss.
Sometimes they feel like life has lost its meaning and purpose.
However, when grandchildren are born, it can feel like life has begun again.
I've
never been able to understand why some couples decide not to have children.
Children are work and it does take time, patience, sacrifice and money to raise
them, but they give so much more than that back to you.
It isn't a temporary kind of happiness, either. It is the kind of
happiness that goes clear through you and lasts forever.
We were just presented with our 8th grandchild. He was
born into a family that already had 3 sons. Some
people have asked me why they either wanted or needed another child.
Why should anyone put limits on their happiness? If we have the
desire, means and opportunity to raise another child, why is that questionable?
Can anyone deny, seeing a picture of this new baby and his
brothers, that this child has been born into a nurturing home and that his life
will be full of love and happiness?
I hope that the world never gets so cynical that it forgets what
true family is all about. I hope that there will always be families that know
how to love each other, and make each other happy.
Family is still, and will always be, the greatest meaning of
life. Anything that is good for families, is good for people, cultures and
countries.
Anything that hurts the family, hurts all of us.
To any of you young people who may read this, don't settle for
one of society's shallow substitutes for family. There is only one road to
true happiness.
Be smart, be wise, and choose to be happy. Families are forever.
