Baby
Milestones - "Firsts"
by Jane O'Neill
When you are a new parent, there are many events, involving
"firsts" for a new baby which you want to record.
Listed below are 30 milestones (in no particular order) which are hailed as
mementos occasions and take place mainly in a baby's first year of life:
* First Photograph
* First Feed
* First Sleep
* First Nappy Change
* First Day of Life
* First Outfit
* First Ride in Car Seat
* First Day Home
* First Lift of Head
* First Family Outing
* First Trip in the Pram
* First Smile
* First Visitors
* First Bath
* First Tooth
* First Taste of Solid Food
* First Drinking from a Cup
* First Rolling Over
* First Crawl
* First Giggle/Laugh
* First Time Sitting Up
* First Crawling
* First Steps
* First Word
* First Haircut
* First Friend
* First Holiday
* First Birthday
* First Christmas
* First Day at School
The recording of baby's first milestones is particularly evident in the case
of first born children. With one child parents have the time to note these
eventful occasions and to record them appropriately, often in a baby book.
Unfortunately, when subsequent children arrive, the recordings for these
siblings tend to be more infrequent. This is just the reality of life. First
born children tend to have more baby photos and more video recordings than
subsequent children.
I myself am a second born child and I remember asking my parents why there
were so many photos of my brother as a baby and very few of me. My mum replied
the camera broke when I was a baby and they never got round to getting it fixed.
I am not entirely sure if this is true but is was a plausible reply.
I too have fallen into the trap of the first born child syndrome. When my
baby daughter was born we never stopped taking pictures, the camera went
everywhere with us and we held a huge first birthday party for her. When my
second child arrived, a son, we seemed to have to keep reminding ourselves to
take the camera with us and to take pictures and when his first birthday arrived
we just about managed a cake! Since I was a second born child I vowed this would
not happen when I had my own children but unfortunately in reality I'm ashamed
to say it did. I have since made up for this and am now pleased to say we have
oodles of pictures of both children and I managed to complete a beautiful baby
book for both!
