Budgets and *Bling*
by Nikki Willhite
Everyone needs a little bit of *bling* in their lives. Without
it, life is just plain boring.
What is bling? According to the dictionary, bling was first
used as a word in 1999. Bling is broadly defined as "expensive
and ostentatious."
Everyone differs in what they consider expensive or ostentatious.
A pianist may long for a nicer piano. A crafter may wish for a
better sewing machine. There is nothing wrong with wanting that
which brings us pleasure. There is nothing wrong with buying
things that we can afford.
It is when we desire bling either because we want to
impress other people, or we start defining ourselves by our
possessions that it becomes a problem.
How much better to hope, save, and eventually buy a few
items that are really important to us, than to become obsessed
with having the "best" of everything and trying to impress other
people.
Frugal people can have bling, and still be frugal. Low income
people can have bling in their lives. What is bling to me is
probably laughable to Bill Gates. Who cares? What makes me
happy, and what I deem worthy of work and sacrifice to achieve is
all that matters.
Make yourself happier by carefully selecting your *bling* .
