Save money on compost for gardening by making it yourself.  Use any kind of container that allows for air circulation.  Fill it with grass clippings and vegetable scraps from your kitchen.

Using a pitch fork or shovel, move it around and add water about once a week.  After a few months you will have a frugal, thrift friendly soil amendment for your flower beds or pots and planters.
