Cookies: Decorating

decorated sugar cookies

Save money decorating cookies by using a thrift friendly frosting.  Put a little granulated sugar in a bowl.  Add the food coloring of your choice and mix well.  Sprinkle on the cookies while they are still warm.

Here is a frugal and classic homemade rolled cookie recipe to decorate.

Ingredients

1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp almond flavoring
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda

Cream the butter and the sugar.  Add the egg, the vanilla and the almond flavoring.

Sift the dry ingredients, and then add to the mixture.  Put the dough in the refrigerator to chill for approximately 3 hours.

Roll out the dough, and cut into shapes.  Place on a greased baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 7 minutes, or until lightly browned. Sprinkle with granulated sugar before baking, if desired.
