Cleaning Your Bathroom
by Nikki Willhite
Next to the kitchen, the bathroom is one of those rooms in
your house that requires constant cleaning. While cleaning the kitchen can be rewarding, cleaning the
bathroom is just plain drudgery.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP WITH THIS CHORE
Quick Cleaning
- Begin by taking out the trash, and gathering and up towels or
floor mats that need cleaning and get them going in the washing machine. Most
shower curtains can also be put in the washing machine and hung to dry.
- Then start cleaning, from the top down, in case any dirt falls
on the floor. Clean the mirrors and shower door first. One of the most frugal ways to
clean is to use just plain ammonia. (Just be sure never to mix it with bleach or
you will create toxic fumes)
- If you have a bathtub, clean the sink and counter next. After
you clean the sink, you do not want to rinse you washcloth in it. If you
don't have a bathtub, do the sink last.
If you want to make a cleaning solution similar to 409, here is a
homemade recipe:
2 Tbsp white vinegar
1 Tbsp Borax
1/3 cup liquid dish soap
1 cup hot water
- Clean the toilet, and then clean the bathtub.
- If you don't like the smell of ammonia, you can use vinegar, or
you can use a homemade solution of water, liquid soap and a little bleach.
- Finally sweep and mop the floor.
- If you have not used a disinfectant like bleach, you may want to spray the
surfaces in your bathroom with a disinfectant spray like Lysol.
Maintenance
- Periodically use pure vinegar in the tub and shower area to
remove scum.
- Wash down the walls. Here is a good solution to wash down walls
1 cup of ammonia
1/2 cup vinegar
1/4 cup baking soda
- Clean the grout and re-grout when necessary. To clean grout,
use a commercial cleaner, or spray with a mixture of water and bleach.
- Replace bathroom items with regularity to keep down
germs, This includes tooth brushes, your makeup, and toilet brushes.
Prevention
- Keep bathmats outside shower doors and next to tubs to protect the
floor from water damage.
- Freshen drains with baking soda and water, or a chemical agent
weekly to prevent clogging.
- Declutter under the bathroom sink so you don't lose products
and waste storage space. Get rid of items that you don't use. Once you get your
bathroom sparkling clean, it is a lot easier to keep it that way. It also
becomes a more "pleasant" task to clean the bathroom.
Don't pinch pennies when it comes to the health of your family.
If you don't want to make homemade cleaning solutions, don't do it. Buy what you
need, and get rid of the germs.
