Today, as the result of a doctor's appointment, I started
thinking about clothing and aging. As I walked into the waiting room of my
doctor, I immediately noticed how crowded it was. Then I noticed it was filled with senior citizens. There wasn't a
young person in that room (including me).
As I sat waiting for my doctor, I took a good look around the
room. I noticed that all of the older women in the room were either wearing
jeans or stretch pants, as well as athletic type shoes. I also noticed one lady, wearing jeans, and
how obvious it was that she had a pair of diapers on underneath them. (Note
to self: If I end up in diapers, give up the jeans).
Diapers aside, this made me think about how our wardrobe changes
when we get older. You hear a lot of jokes about "grannies". Every time some young person makes a
deprecating remark about
"grannie decor" on HGTV I just want to hit them on the head with
a hula hoop.
Some day these little kids are going to realize that the word
grandmother is one of the most beautiful words in the English
language - assuming they have grandchildren.
However, I digress. I heard once that when women age, they either
try too hard with the makeup, or
they just give up trying. Is the same thing true for clothing and
shoes?
AM I GOING TO CARE WHAT I WEAR IN A FEW MORE YEARS, AND IS THERE
ANYTHING TO LEARN HERE AS A FRUGAL PERSON?
I did think it looked a little odd to see these older women in such "youthful"
clothing. However, what is the alternative? Should women of advanced years be wearing body covering dresses
and strings of pearls? Or should they just pull the slipcover off their
sofa and wear that?
No matter how old our chronological age, or how our body changes on the
outside, we still feel young inside. We look in the mirror, and our minds
are kind to us and revert to images from younger years.
I guess it follows that if we feel young inside, we are going to want to reflect
that with our clothing. So as a result of my percolation on the subject, I
have come to the following conclusions:
1 - I can wear whatever I want, no matter how old I am.
2 - I should choose my clothes carefully, because I may be wearing
them for a number
of years yet.
3 - I am still going to care about how I look, no
matter how I look.
And finally...I want to be the cutest 90 year-old in the
nursing home. My grandmother was in a nursing home for 10 years.
The attraction between men and women never stops. (Trust me
on this one.) Ever seen a cat fight with canes and walkers? Too
many women, too few men. <sigh>
