Clutter Blunders
by Nikki Willhite
Want a clutter-free and organized house? Here is what NOT to do.
- Keep too much stuff.
Clutter grows and like weeds, and can become overwhelming.
If something is not serving you, get rid of it.
- Move items around.
If you change the places in your home where you keep
things, you will find it hard to remember where you put them. Group similar
items together.
Empty out junk drawers, and take the items to the most logical place. Do
this with even the smallest of items, like paper clips, rubberbands, and
shoelaces. Things get lost when they are scattered all over your house,
and you may spend money buying that which you already have.
- Make decisions too quickly.
All of us get busy, and sometimes things
come into our home that we hurriedly put out of sight. This can become a
habit and lead to a disorganized mess. Keep ONE box in your utility room,
in a cabinet or even in the garage for things that need a permanent home.
- Not attending to paperwork.
I doubt anyone's favorite pastime is
filing, paying bills or filling out forms. However, if you put it off, you
eventually have, at best, a bunch of boring work that is going to take
a large chunk of time, or a pile of semi-permanent papers and things that never
get done,.
As far as mail, bills, and paperwork, have an "in" and "out" box. Set it
in a prominent place, and keep up with it in
small, manageable tasks.
- In conclusion
Most of us buy too much stuff, thinking it will make us happy. Stuff only
pushes our walls in on us, and makes our homes less pleasant. If we rely
on buying stuff to make us happy, we are setting ourselves up for misery,
because money doesn't last forever - one way or the other.
Choose to be happy. Get rid of that which does not serve you, make you
comfortable, or that you do not need. Live the simple life surrounded be the useful,
meaningful, and purposeful items that you truly need.
