How to Sell Items Online Successfully Every
Time with Killer Descriptions
by Amanda
O'Brien
When thinking how to sell
items online, no matter what those items may be, you can never overestimate how
important the description is to the process.
Descriptions that don't include the facts, descriptions that are written
with a multitude of spelling mistakes and descriptions that don't sell the
product in question at all will all struggle to bring in profits. Creating the
ideal listing may seem like a daunting and difficult task, particularly if you
aren't confident when it comes to writing. But never fear; this guide will help
you to think about the important things to consider when writing killer
descriptions that will sell your items time and time again.
How long should you spend on the description?
There are other important considerations in creating a listing on eBay, such
as the photo, the title and even the auction finishing time. With so much to
think about it can be difficult to know exactly how much time to dedicate to
creating the description itself. Without good descriptions you will struggle to
sell items online, but at the same time you don't need to spend hours creating a
great sales letter when you only have one of that particular product to sell,
and you are only expecting it to fetch £5.
Before starting your listing, determine how much time you will dedicate to
it so that you don't spend too much of your precious time on it. Consider things
like how many of the item you have to sell (the more items you have, the more
time you can afford to spend on the description) and how much money you are
expecting to take (expensive items may mean it's worth putting more effort into
your description).
What should the description include?
Your description needs to be factual. It should detail all of the features
that your particular product has, and the overall condition of it. Never lie to
mask a fault or to embellish the item beyond the truth. You'll suffer for it
when your customer receives an item that wasn't as described.
Don't be afraid to write persuasively regarding the benefits of the item in
question. But always remember that your audience needs to know the facts, they
might not be interested in just a sales pitch.
How should the description be displayed?
The appearance of your description is very important. Setting a bright green
background and using a fluorescent yellow font will not help your audience to
read the information that they desire. Keep things black and white, a white
background with a black, clear font. Colours can certainly be used for
embellishing keywords or phrases that will help your viewers to pick out key
information, but don't overdo it and don't use too many different colours or
your finished product will be offensive to the eyes. You should also keep the
number of different fonts that you use to a minimum, however different sizes of
fonts can also help to drive home a point, if used effectively.
With great descriptions you won't struggle to sell items online, whatever
the item may be. Don't rush the description writing process, you will be
surprised at how much difference it could make to your overall profits.
