Is Extreme Couponing TOO Extreme?
by Nikki Willhite
I have to admit I only recently watched 3 episodes of Extreme
Couponing. I found it very interesting.
I also have to admit it was enticing- watching all the *free*
groceries and other items being taken out of the store.
However, I have some strong reservations about this pastime.
Bear in mind, this article is coming from someone who does store
food in her home, for emergencies.
- First of all, I have to wonder if people who are so organized
and pay so much attention to detail, couldn't spend their time in
a better manner. Once you use the coupons, your income is over.
If you invested that time in yourself, you could develop a skill
to provide you with a steady paycheck.
One lady talked about how coupons had enabled her to buy a nice
house and car. That I didn't understand. I don't pay enough
money for my food to cover my utility bill.
- Next I was concerned about the items that the people were
bringing home. Coupons are usually provided for highly processed
foods, like cereals. Using coupons for so many of these type
items just increases your intake of this kind of food which is
not healthy and can lead to excessive weight and other health problems.
- Finally, I always have to ask "What would happen if everyone
did this?" In the case of storing extra food in your home for
emergencies, everyone would be better off. When you store extra
food, you are storing it both for yourself and your neighbors.
Should your neighbors have to run up the hill for refuge, you
would have the food to feed them.
However, if everyone started doing this Extreme Couponing, soon
the coupons would stop, and everyone would be hurt.
Personally, I would never do extreme couponing for 4 reasons.
1. I don't have the time.
2. I have enough stress in
my life. I don't need those "panic moments" at the cash register.
3. I don't want the
feelings of negativity that would be coming my way from store personnel.
4. I don't to have to deal
with the "I felt like I just robbed the store" thoughts in my mind.
Having said that, kudos to those who work hard to live within their income.
However, "extremes".... not usually so good.
