What is family history, and why is it important to your family? There have
always been genealogists who have researched family lines. However more and more
people are taking an interest in their ancestors.
I think all of us were stirred in 1977 when the movie Roots was released. There
is something about knowing about your history and the people and sacrifices that
brought you to this earth that is uplifting.
One of the biggest gifts that you can give to your family is to leave them as
much as you know about your family history. You know things that are going to
die with you if you don't write them down.
You can also research and learn things about your family to pass on to future
generations.
There are so many ways to do family history research and to record it on the
Internet.
One of the best places is Ancestry.com. It is amazing. As you type in the
information you already know, little leaves will pop up that will give you tips
to links to official documents for the person you have typed in, such as birth
and census records. You will also receive tips to other family trees where
people have the same names and you may find they have generations of work
already done for your family.
You can attach their pictures of your relatives to your site, as well as the
data and stories and other documents that pertain to your family.
Some people prefer to keep their info private, but you can contact them and ask
for an "invite" to view their information.
Ancestry.com can be expensive but there are ways to reduce the cost while
recording your information. Ancestry starts with a 2-week free trial. You
can easily cancel it at the end of the 2 weeks.
After you are a member, you can still go in without cost to the information you
have uploaded, being called a guest, and add more data, pictures or stories.
The only difference is that you cannot do research. However, when you want to do
research, you can pay for a couple months, and then go back to being a guest.
In the meantime, all your pictures, stores, and the chart of your family tree
will be up for generations to come.
There are also other sites that help with genealogy that are free, including
lots of forums that can put you in touch with other people researching your
family.
For recording information on your hard drive, most people download the free PAF
program from the LDS church (who are the experts on genealogy) at this URL:

People are important, and families are important. Everyone wants to be
remembered. I promise you that as you look at the names and faces of your
ancestors and your heritage, it will bring tears to your eyes.
Don't let your family and your ancestors be forgotten. Save your family
information for your children, grandchildren and their children.
I encourage you to take some time to record your family history, and to bless
the lives of you posterity for years to come.
