How to Frugally Decorate a Baby Nursery
by Nikki Willhite
Most rooms are decorated for the people who use them. Decorating
a baby room is done for the parents.
Babies don't need much more than a crib and a changing table with
storage. All the "bells and whistles" of the modern baby nursery have come about
because people are having less children, and having them later in life, when
they have more money.
Decorating a nursery is a fun things to do. If money is
limited, here are some things to consider when decorating for your baby.
- You can make the greatest impact for the least amount of money
with color. Use a couple colors on the walls. Use a different color on the lower
section of the walls, or use painter's tape to make designs on the walls.
Make a creative accent wall, or paint a mural.
- Stencil letters on the wall. You might write the name of your
child, a favorite nursery rhyme, letters and numbers, or just something that
warms your heart.
- Make new furniture as versatile as possible. Check Craig's list
and garage sales for used furniture. Again, use paint to create a happy and fun
color scheme.
- Limit the amount of furniture. You need a crib and somewhere to
change diapers. A changing table with drawers is a multi-purpose piece of
furniture. If you can afford it, a comfortable chair to sit in while you feed
the baby is very convenient.
- Limit your accessories, but have at least one item on the wall
that is playful and fun. It you can't afford a picture or some plaques, think
about decals or borders.
- Bring fabric into the room to soften it. You can use it as part
of the window treatment, as a dust ruffle around the bottom of the crib, or hang
it to frame the crib.
- Make a quilt that ties all the colors in the room together.
Drape it over a chair.
Less can be more when attention is given to detail. One of the
easiest ways to decorate is to start with an inspiration piece. If you have a
piece of art you love, or some item you love and want to use in the nursery, use
it as your inspiration. Start by pulling out the colors and spreading them
around the room. Then see what you can add to it.
This is going to be one of the happiest, yet challenging times of
your life. Decorate the room of your baby to reflect your happiness and
joy.
