Tips
Bathrooms
Shower Curtains - Buy a good quality shower curtain, and you won't have
to replace it all the time. Keep it clean by spraying it with a solution of
water and bleach on a regular basis, or putting it in the washing machine. Just
hang it up to dry or you can put it in the dryer on low heat with a few towels
to keep it soft. If you get a rip in it, you can try masking it with clear tape.
Use the wide kind like you use to wrap packages.
Shower Curtain Draperies - Shower curtains are not just vinyl anymore.
They come in a host of colors, patterns and fabrics, and are a good economical
substitute for a traditional pair of drapes.
Tile - If you have tile in your bathroom or kitchen that is a color that
you do not like, you do not have to remove it. Try painting it. You need to use
a special primer and paint, but it is much cheaper and less messy than removing
it.
Bedrooms
Flannel Sheets - Many people like to use flannel sheets, because they
keep you warmer, and you can turn the heat down at night. There are a couple
things you should know about flannel, so that your prolong the life of your
sheets as long as possible. First of all, never use bleach when you wash them.
It breaks down the fibers. The other thing is that when you wash and dry them,
keep the temperature of the water down, and the dryer heat low.
Mattresses - Buy the best mattress you can afford. If your mattress
has a 10- year guarantee, you can almost count on the spring popping through in
that amount of time - especially if you don't turn and flip it with regularity.
Another thing to remember, especially with children's bedding, is to protect it.
Put a vinyl mattress pad below the regular mattress pad. If you buy a good
mattress pad to cover it, you will not even know it is there.
Mattress Protectors - Here is an idea for an inexpensive mattress
protector. Pick up a shower curtain at the Dollar Store. If you put it under a
good quality mattress pad, it won't feel any different. You can cut it to the
size of your mattress for a good fit.
Air Mattresses - Sleeper sofas are expensive, and the mattresses
usually are not very good. Here is an alternative to buying a new sleeper sofa
when yours is inadequate. Buy an inflatable mattress (or air bed) and just place
it on top of the worn out mattress on the sleeper bed. Inflatable mattresses are
very comfortable to sleep on, but much easier to use if they are not placed on
the floor. They don't take much room to store, and your guests will be much more
comfortable.
Kitchens
Appliance Paint - Nothing dates a kitchen like an olive green or gold
appliance. If your appliance still works, but you dislike the color, buy some
spray paint formulated for appliances. You can also find people that specialize
in painting appliances. Dishwashers are usually easy, because the older ones
have several panels. Just unscrew the colored panel from the front, and see what
is underneath.
Counter Tops - If you are living with laminate counter tops that you
do not like, you have several inexpensive options. You can paint
them, either another color or with a spray paint that adds a texture like stone.
If you counter top is in good condition, you don't have to replace it if you
want to apply tile.
Pot Racks - Here is a fun project to give character to your kitchen if
you have a nice selection of pots and pans. Pick up an old or inexpensive ladder
Stain or paint it to match your kitchen decor. Attach it to the ceiling of your
kitchen. All you need is some hooks and you can hang your pots pans and save
some room in your cupboards.
