Tips

Cast Iron Cooking - If you live in an with power outages, think about investing in a cast iron pot. Store a few bags of charcoal briquettes, you will be prepared for cooking if the power goes out. Charcoal is cheap, and lasts forever.  You can find cast iron pots at Walmart. You only need 12 briquettes to bring the temperature up to 350 degrees with charcoal.  Spend the time to learn how to cook in them. You can do everything from baking bread to cooking main dishes in them. And, of course, they are great for camping. You must use your cast iron OUTSIDE...but if you suffer from an extended power outage, you won't mind.

Emergency Car Alarm - If you have a car alarm that you can set off with your keychain, you have a makeshift burglar alarm. Keep your keys handy, and if someone tries to break into your home, set it off. It will probably scare them away, or at least give you time to call the police.

Phone Books - Be sure and keep a phone book in your car. If your car breaks down or gets a flat tire, you will have the numbers to call for help. It's also handy if you decide to call a store for directions, store hours and other information while on the road.

Solar Lights - A lot of people put solar lights in their front yard. We have a few....but the light from them is limited on dark days when they don't get enough sun. However, if you live in a sunny area, they work well. If your power should go out in the evening, think about pulling one out of the ground and bringing it into your home for emergency lighting.
