You Don't Have to Spend a Lot to Have an
Energy Efficient Home
by
Avner Leibovitch
Do you want to take part in saving the environment? One of the many ways you
can do so is by having an energy efficient home? If you are worried about the
cost of converting to energy efficient devices, you can make your home energy
efficient without spending a lot. You see, a simple tweaking of a few home
appliances can turn your home into an energy efficient one.
Replace
Some electrical devices in your home are essential parts of your daily
living. You can start replacing them with similar devices that are much more
energy efficient. For instance, if you are using incandescent light bulbs,
replace them with fluorescent bulbs? Fluorescent bulbs are more expensive, but
they are much more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. They last longer
too, allowing you to save money on your electric bills in the long run. You can
also replace your usual on-off switches with those that have the "dimmer"
option. This way, you can use only enough light for what you want to do. Plus,
you will not need to buy lamps anymore because your new dimmer switch can do
that for you. Aside from making your home more energy efficient, you save money
since you do not have to buy unnecessary items.
Cover 'Em Up
Your temperature-modifiers are necessary for the cold winters and hot
summers. The problem is these home devices are electricity hogs. They are the
reasons your electric bill is high. Obviously, you can't uninstall these devices
because they are essential. What you can do is maximize the generated coolness
or warmth by covering up rooms that don’t need cooled or warmed. One easy and
cheap way you can do that is by covering up windows in the basement or other
rooms in your home that are not being used often. You should also check the
doors, windows, or walls for any holes. Cover those up with adhesive stripping
you can buy from any hardware store. Make sure also that your garage is properly
closed. Even access ways to your attic should be covered to save up some energy.
Shop
Appliances manufactured a decade or some years ago consume much more energy
than newer appliances. So if your fridge is at least 10 years old, consider
buying a new fridge that is more energy efficient. Unless you are desperately
strapped for cash, buying an energy efficient fridge will save you money in the
long run. Your electric bill will certainly go down. Consider installing a
ceiling fan in your home too as it can help distribute warmth evenly. Compared
to an AC, fans use less electricity.
Go Natural
If your house has natural ventilation, use that instead of your air
conditioning system to get rid of the warmth inside your house. You will not
only enjoy fresher air but a more energy efficient home as well. You can also
use natural lighting keeping your fluorescent bulbs on the whole day. For
instance, you can have a see-through roof installed in your kitchen or room so
you do not need to turn on the light during the day; for lighting, you can use
natural light. You can easily close and open the see-through roof with a switch.
Take note, though, that see-through roof installations can be expensive, but you
can save on electric bill for many, many years.
There are certainly a lot of things you can do to turn your home into an
energy efficient home. You may have to shell out some money in order to do so,
but not as much as what most people think. Besides, what you may need to spend
today is small compared to how much you will be able to save later on in terms
of energy costs.
