Tips
Alarms - If you have a car alarm that you
can set off with your keychain, you have a makeshift burglar alarm. Keep your
keys handy, and if someone tries to break into your home, set it off.
It will probably scare them away, or at least give you time to call the
police.
Cell Phones - If you
have concerns about safety keep your cell phone close by; including taking it in
the bathroom with you.
Dogs - Dogs deter criminals.
You can even purchase a machine that plays barking sounds.
Funerals - Be aware that criminals watch the obituary section of the
newspaper on the lookout for times when houses will be vacant. Always have
people at your house during these troubling times.
Landscaping - Remove all the bushes and other foliage around your home
that hides the entrances to your home.
Lighting - Keep your outside lights on at night. Motion sensor
lights save on electrical costs.
Locks- Use quality deadbolt locks on your doors. When
applicable, use iron bars on your windows.
Routines- Vary your routines when possible, so someone watching your
house is never sure when you leave the house.
Signs - Use security protection signs and decals on your windows even
if you don't have a security system.
Vacations - Be sure to stop all mail and paper delivery when you are
away. Have a neighbor keep an eye on your house and remove unwanted
papers.
Valuables- Never put valuable items near windows where they can be
seen from the outside.
