 Tips

Car Rentals

Car Rentals - Be sure and check around before you rent a car. Most people call a few car rental businesses, but neglect to try car dealers. You may get a better deal with a car dealer- depending on how badly they need money. As always, negotiate.

We always rent cars for vacations.  It saves wear and tear on our personal vehicles.  We keep our cars for many, many years.

Car Rental Insurance - If you are planning on renting a car for a vacation, it will be more economical for you to use the insurance on your home vehicle. If you have an older car, and do not have collision insurance on your car, add it to your policy for the time you plan on being on vacation. Call your insurance agent at least 30 days before your vacation to give them time to add it to your policy.

Hotels

Business Rates - You pay less when you book a hotel at a business rate. Most hotels are glad to give it to you, even for personal use. When you call for a reservation, just ask if you can have the business rate.

Meals and Activities

Coupons - With a little effort, you can find freebies for your vacation. When you decide where you want to go, find the Internet sites for those spots. Write them, and ask for information packets on what to see and do in their area. When they send the information, they will usually enclose money saving coupons from the local merchants- including the places you will go to eat.

Local Attractions - Make sure you expose you children to all the attractions in your community. Sometimes we are unaware of all the places to visit in our own neighborhood. When I was a den mother, I found out about many places to take kids that I didn't know about. I found out that major employers in the area often have their own museums. Fire stations offer tours, and that most cities have botanical gardens and historical sites. Visit your chamber of commerce, or go online to your city's website to find a list of attractions in your area.

Off Season - Travelling off season will save money. You may have to take your children out of school, but most teachers are cooperative, and will give you the assignments they need to complete while they are gone.

Planning Ahead - You will always save money on your vacations by planning ahead. If you schedule in advance, you will get cheaper airfare and discounted hotel rooms. If you are going camping, you need to reserve your spot before they are all taken.

Fun at Home

Local Attractions: Take advantage of all the free recreational activities in your community with your family? Ask yourself these questions:

When was the last time our family....

Went to the Park?
Visited the Zoo?
Went Swimming?
Played Tennis?
Had a Picnic?
Visited a Landmark?

If you are in a rut, get out.  Have some frugal fun with your family.
