Thrift and car expenses do not go hand-in-hand.  Automobiles are expense to buy, run, and maintain. There are many ways to save money on gas and to drive your car in a frugal manner.  Some tips save a lot of money, others save just a little.  The biggest way to save on gasoline is to just drive less.  Do not take your car out for just one thing.  Keep a list of errands you need to run, and do them at times when you must take out the car.

You don't need to spend more than a minute warming up your car.  Turn the car off if you need to idle, out of traffic, more than 30 seconds. Drive it at a steady speed.

Keep your car as light as possible by removing unnecessary items from the trunk or back of the car.   Hold off on the air-conditioning and keep the windows closed. Keep up the maintenance on your car, and keep your tires inflated.
