Green Thumb Gardening

by Nikki Willhite

mom's corn

Gardening is one of America's favorite hobbies. We grow pretty flowers, landscape our homes, and grow food.

Some people are said to have a "green thumb." What does that mean?

My mother was a terrific gardener. The picture above shows her standing in front of her crop of corn. That isn't even her land. She was living in Mission Beach, San Diego at the time. I've you've ever been to Mission Beach, you know that it is just a little strip of land sandwiched between the ocean and the bay.  As with most beach communities, it is crammed with houses and people, and mostly concrete and cement.  One of the few vacant pieces of land in that area happened to be behind her house.

So how did my mother grow corn that high?  Did she have one of those "green thumbs" ?

The "green thumb" theory is nothing but a funny expression people use to mask their desire to garden. Gardening is work. More than that, it requires a lot of research and preparation.

My mother did her gardening before the age of the computer. She did it the old-fashioned way. She read garden books and talked to the personnel working at the garden store.   She knew that everything that she planted had preferences. Plants are all different as far as the type of soil they prefer, when to plant them, how much fertilizer and what type of fertilizer to apply, watering, etc.

The soil my mother used was hard and compact.  There wasn't a man around to help her.  She broke it up herself, with a pick and a shovel.  She carried home the heavy bags of soil amendments, fertilizers, and everything she needed to grow her selected plants. She followed all of the rules, and she succeeded.  Way to go mom!

If you are going to garden, do your homework. It is so easy now with the Internet. Don't waste your time or your money growing a mediocre crop. There are a lot of start up expenses growing a garden, but if you do it right, you will be rewarded with delicious food you can share with friends and family. Eventually your garden be the thrift friendly.

No more excuses.  "Green thumb"....I think not.  Anyone can do it. Like most things, it just takes desire, work, and dedication.
