Hot Weather and Your Health
by Nikki Willhite
When the weather is hot, you have to change your lifestyle. Heat
can be dangerous. The young and elderly are particularly at
risk.
Here are some things to keep in mind. If you have an elderly
neighbor, be sure and check up on them, as sometimes the heat
even affects our thinking.
DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS
When people become dehydrated, they can lose their sense of
thirst. Drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
KEEP COOL
If your house does not have a cooling system, go to the library
or somewhere else where it is cool during the heat of the day.
Put blankets over your windows to keep out the sun, and if you
have one, go down to the basement, where it is usually cooler.
If your area is not having a water shortage, just running the
sprinkler in front of an open window will have a cooling effect
on your home.
KEEP OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT
Stay in the house or in shade when outdoors.
CHOOSE YOUR CLOTHING CAREFULLY
Wear clothing that lets air in and out, like cotton. Do not wear
dark colors, which absorb heat, or polyester knits, that trap it.
SLOW DOWN
Put off anything that requires a lot
of physical exertion, or do it in small, manageable tasks with frequent
breaks.
SLEEP DURING THE HEAT OF THE DAY
In countries with hot weather, many people sleep during the heat
of the day, and then do their work in the evening.
Excessive heat is a serious heath risk. Do not take it lightly. Protect
you family, and be mindful of others.
