Help for the Hiccups
by Nikki Willhite
Hiccups can be funny when you are young, but they are really
annoying when you get older.
For most people hiccups are a minor irritation, but for those
whose hiccups will not stop for several days it is a more
serious heath problem, resulting in loss of sleep, among
other things.
What causes hiccups? Lots of things. They can be
caused by eating too much, drinking carbonated beverages, nervousness or
excitement, acid reflex, medications and even diseases.
Everyone has their own suggestion for getting rid of the hiccups.
Some try drinking water, trying to time the swallowing
of the water with the expected hiccup.
Other put sugar under their tongue, trying holding their breath and counting
to 10, or tell other people to scare them.
Whenever I hiccup I immediately stop WHATEVER I am doing and relax
my body and clear my mind. That usually stops them in their tracks.
Then I take a drink of water, and go on with whatever I was doing.
HERE ARE SOME OTHER SUGGESTIONS TO GET RID OF THE HICCUPS
- Pull on your tongue
- Breathe into a paper bag
- Gargle
- Eat some ice
- Suck on a piece of lemon
- Warm up some honey and lemon
juice and drink it
- Eat some fresh ginger
- Lie on your back, tilt your head back, and open your mouth.
- Drink a glass of water while someone else pushes in the skin that sticks out
in front of your ear lobes
- Sit down and lean over your
knees
The good news is that hiccups usually go away. However if
they last longer than 3 hours, or you have any other symptoms, you need to seek
medical help.
