Spruce up the Bathroom for the Holidays

by Jill Black

Bathroom looking a little tired? As you think about getting your home ready for holiday entertaining, don't forget the bathroom. After all, it is bound to be the one place just about all your guests will visit. If your bathroom is in reasonable condition, a quick freshen up will make your bathroom the most popular room in the house this holiday season.

 1. Change the personality of your bathroom with new accessories. New towel bars and toilet paper holders are easy to install and soap dishes, toothbrush holders, cups, and liquid soap dispensers are readily available in coordinating finishes to match your faucets for extra style.

 2. Invest in plush guest towels in your favorite color or use complementary or contrasting towels with a holiday theme or colors.

 3. A new rug helps add warmth to the bathroom, and camouflage worn floors. For a tropical themed bathroom try a bamboo floor mat matched with other warm, textured accessories like rattan chairs and baskets for towels and bath items.

 4. Add some style and increase shelf space at the same time by using multi-tiered glass shelves or double towel racks. Wall mounts, which can include vases, candleholders and mirrors, are a multifunctional option.

5. Canister sets are at home in many settings. Lidded canisters are ideal for holding bath salts, beads, sponges and soaps.

 6. Glass and metal decorating accessories are as useful as they are beautiful. Clear glass containers allow the beauty and color of soaps and bath oils to compliment your color scheme. Glass cruets and apothecary jars are perfect for displaying bath salts, beads, oils and soaps.

 7. Add a scented candle, both for beauty and as a gentle way to freshens the air. Scented candles, soaps and other accessories can be used to accent and tie together a decorating theme e.g. a nautical or Asian themed bathroom. Adding a ledge of candles or a romantic French style table lamp provides extra ambience and style to a bathroom

 8. Turn a boring, plain bathroom mirror into a work of art by adding pictureframe molding to the mirror's edges. Or for an even more affordable variation, use moldings from the craft store and paint, stain or decorate it with anything you like.

 9. Monograms are not just for tablecloths and napkins or expensive towels and robes found in hotels. They are showing up on soap, bathrobes, vanity accessories and lampshades as well. Start a tradition and embroider your own family initials onto towels and wash cloths or appliqué initials using scraps of satin, linen or ribbon. Try sewing a contrasting band of color onto the edges of towels to match the color of the bathroom décor.

 10. Add some greenery. An Aloe Vera plant works well in a modern setting and has the advantage of acting as an emergency first aid measure for cuts. In a villa or traditional setting try a member of the fern family. Do not use plants with soft or velvety leaves as the steam and moisture will cause the plant to die.

 11. Make you walls interesting with Art. Decorate the walls with framed memorable items collected through the years like Christmas carol sheet music, children's art, or menus from restaurants visited on vacations. Valuable or heirloom pieces however, are best not displayed in the bathroom where temperature and humidity varies. When hanging art in the bathroom, seal pictures behind glass for protection. Clean frames and glass regularly.

Make use of narrow wall spaces. Accentuate the narrow space between e.g. windows or door frames by displaying two or more matching prints in identical frames. Tightly grouping an even number of pictures in a small space or narrow bathroom gives a window effect. Enhance this effect by using light colors and slender frames.
