Home Safe Home
by Nikki Willhite
Everyone wants their home to be safe. Homes should be as safe as
we can make them. I want to live a "simple life", but I cannot do that
until I feel my family is safe and secure in our home. We need to do everything we can to protect our families from
accidents, burglars, fires, pests and other emergencies.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE
Fires and Emergencies
- Keep smoke detectors in your kitchen and near your bedrooms.
Use both battery alarms and hard wired alarms.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and know how to use
it.
- Never leave candles unattended.
- Keep an eye on food cooking
in your kitchen.
- Keep your distance from open flame fireplaces. Be sure wood fireplaces
are up to code, and will not ignite fireplace surrounds or carpet.
- Don't collect junk and make your house a fire hazard.
- Don't store flammable products in the house or garage. Even propane
tanks let off gas that can be ignited when you start your car.
- Keep enough food in your house so that if you can't get to the store,
or if there is an emergency situation in your area and the stores run out
of food, that you will be able to feed your family until help comes.
Protecting Your Home
- Do not plant trees close to your home or your driveway and
sidewalk. Spreading roots can cause all kinds of problems, from
lifting up sidewalks to growing through underground pipes. If a pipe
breaks open between your house and the curb, you will be paying the water bill,
which will not be pretty. (It is not covered by your insurance policy).
- Keep your gutters clean and free from debris. Gutters that
don't operate properly allow water to fall on the ground in the wrong places. It can get
under your foundation and cause problems from rot to sink holes.
- Be careful of the workmen you allow into your home. Always
check references, and make sure they are licensed and bonded.
- Replace water hoses inside your house every few years. Hoses
get brittle after time, and they may break when you are not
at home to turn off the water.
Protecting Your Possessions
- Keep important papers up high in case of a flood.
- Never give out your personal information to strangers, and follow
all the rules to minimize exposure to
identity theft
and fraud.
Protecting Yourself at Home
- Do not plant landscaping that blocks the view to entrances to
your home. Burglars enter homes through secluded areas. Good lighting and unobstructed doors and windows are much safer.
- If you car has an alarm, keep your keys nearby to set off the
alarm to your car if you hear a burglar.
- Keep your cell phone with you in the evenings in case a burglar
cuts your phone line.
Pests
- Get the foliage away from your house. You will have less spiders, and it will prevent roof rats from getting into your attic.
Do what it takes to sleep well at night. Your home is your
haven. Protect yourself, and protect your family.
