Honest Living in a Dishonest
World
by Nikki Willhite
When I was young I was taught that you shouldn't lie. When I got
older I was taught to be honest in my business dealings.
Honesty always seemed like it was a virtue that made you a better
person. It was something to strive for.
Now I am wondering how many people feel that way today?
As I was eating my lunch today, I turned on the television and
watched a few minutes of The Home and Garden Network. The program that being
aired was an episode of David Bromstad's show Color Splash.
In the show David was remodeling a kitchen. As part of the
process, he decided to replace the kitchen cabinets. He went on the Internet,
found some he liked, and ordered them.
When they arrived, he found that the glass in the doors was not
what he expected. It had a tiny pattern that he did not like.
He went back on the Internet to look at the cabinets again, and
saw that he missed it. He had been in a hurry when he ordered the
cabinets, and had not looked closely enough at the picture.
So he called the store to see if they had any doors in stock that
he could exchange for the ones he had picked up.
I guess he didn't want the trouble of taking back and exchanging
the whole cabinets, because he told the store that he just wanted to exchange
the doors.
What he said was that he only wanted to exchange the doors, and
not bring back the cabinets, because the cabinets were "already installed."
To my amazement, as he said this he turned to the camera and
winked.
Everyone watching the show knew that this wasn't true. Hence
everyone knew that he was lying.
What are we suppose to learn from this? Does winking make it okay
to lie? Is it okay to lie if it makes life easier for you? HGTV-
what were you thinking?
What about the children watching this show? How are you suppose
to explain to them that it is not okay to lie when they see it done so lightly?
I hope that being honest is still a priority for you, and that
you are setting a good example for your children. We all make mistakes, but we
don't have to keep making them.
Choose to be honest, and choose not to tell lies. Don't make
excuses, weight the merits of a lie, rationalize, or indulge in
self-justification.
It is said that those who think it is permissible to tell white
lies soon grow color-blind. There are a lot of beautiful colors in the world.
Don't miss them.
