Life is uncertain. None of us know how long we are going to be upon this
earth.
We all use our time differently. We all have different personalities. We develop
different character traits, both good and bad.
If you knew that you were going to die within a few weeks, and wanted to "check
out" peacefully, would you have a list of people that you needed to talk to and
ask for their forgiveness and make amends? If so, how
long would that list be?
There was a man a few years ago who was asked to do a job in which he would be a
role model and many people would look up to him.
He felt overwhelmed by this responsibility, and although he was a good man, he
was afraid that there were people he might have offended over the years.
Before he took that job, he went and visited everyone that he thought he might
have offended in some way.
Most of us are not going to be asked to do something that will stir our
consciences to that extent. However, if it did happen, how long would our
list be?
How many people have we hurt in some way? Have we told lies, spread gossip, or
taken advantage of other people for our own gain?
It is easy to see the bad deeds of the people on the six o'clock news. It is not
so easy to see the result of deeds that cause things like financial loss and
broken hearts.
Unfortunately, as we go through life we do hurt people, and sometimes we don't
even know we are doing it. Sometimes we are oblivious to it, and other times we
are just insensitive.
From a Christian standpoint, what matters is loving God and loving our neighbor.
Anyone who stops to think and contemplate life's meaning will realize that the
worth of a human soul is great. Anything that we can do to help build a person's
self worth, or help others is a good thing. As an added bonus, the more
you do good things, the happier you yourself are.
As you stand and look at yourself each morning in the mirror, think about the
day to come. You will have opportunities all day to either hurt others or to
help them.
Reflect on the question about the size of your list. Use each day to make
your list shorter, not longer. Choose happiness.
