How to Get Rid of Spider Veins

By Christine Marie Paguntalan

Spider veins are smaller versions of varicose veins and though the phrases are used interchangeably, they are two different conditions. Spider veins lie below the skin surface; a series of broken blood vessels that can appear anywhere on the body, but more often than not, "crawl" up and down the legs and feet.

Symptoms of this condition are not subtle. Swelling, muscle cramps, heaviness, throbbing, itching, and burning are painful indicators of spider veins. Although this vein abnormality may not always cause physical pain, the visual indicators are psychologically painful. Whether one's reason to treat this condition is cosmetic or physical, this article will provide tips on how to get rid of spider veins.

Poor circulation weakens blood vessels, blood vessels break down; broken down blood vessels create a web-like pattern under the skin's surface—spider veins are formed. Several factors contribute to the development of spider veins including heredity, age, hormones, surgery, sun exposure, injury, and even clothing choice; however, doctors have yet to pinpoint an exact cause. Spider veins affect more women than men, more aged than young. Treatments are as varied as the factors ranging from folksy solutions to surgical corrections. Thankfully, there are many home remedies to rid one of these crawling annoyances.

Compression stockings (commonly referred to as support hose) are the first line of defense in treating spider veins. Though it sounds counterintuitive, support hose are clinically proven to provide relief'. Gradual compression stimulates blood movement. Stockings are available in varying strengths with or without a prescription. Find a pair that fit comfortably. Remember this condition is a symptom of poor circulation; therefore, support hose must be properly fitted. Too tight will make the problem worst.

Massage is a relaxing therapy to get rid of spider veins. Light to moderate massage increases circulation. Consult with a professional massage therapist and come up with a plan; the severity of the condition will dictate treatment. Experiment with frequency and intensity.

Exercise and nutrition are listed as a cure for many ailments; this time is no different. Make simple changes in the lifestyle. Get moving. Add walking (even a short one) to the daily routine. Avoid crossing legs. Standing too long, sit. Sitting too long, stand. Learn yoga. Posing gets the blood moving. Reduce salt intake. Maintain a healthy weight. Extra pounds will hinder blood flow and add pressure to the legs. Losing a few pounds through a healthy diet and exercise routine will go a long way to banish spider veins.

To conclude, there are many ways to correct this condition. The most common methods are support hose; massage therapy, and lifestyle modifications. This is a sampling of how to get rid of spider veins. Discuss these and other treatment options with a doctor.
