Four Tactics to Keep Your Brain Young

by Brian McNutt

No matter who we're with, we've experienced the above conversation in one form or another. Losing spectacles that are actually on your face, losing keys only to later locate the fugitive keys in the freezer, or hearing the same tale over and over again because the person telling it forgot the first few times. As people get older, their mental faculties appear to decrease. But do we have to suffer this aspect of getting older? The following are ways to stop your brain's aging and retain acuity.

1. Take two child aspirins a day. As aspirin works as an anti-inflammatory, it can aid good artery health. Blood vessels stay normal and blood clots are prevented. Also, if a blood clot does happen to form, research has demonstrated aspiring to help create additional blood vessels, helping to transport clots more easily to prevent blocked arteries. Mental illnesses can be prevented with daily aspirin intake. Be sure not to take both aspirin and ibuprofen together. These act differently to reduce the effect of either.

2. Find out something new. If you don't engage you mind, you will lose what you have more quickly. Without thinking, you are using your brain all the time. If you do the same things every day, however, you utilize only a limited part of your mental capacity. Hire a personal trainer and they'll never let you dedicate an entire week, let alone a year, to just one body part. The same should apply to your brain. Educating yourself will force your brain to work differently. If you rest where you're content for a period that's too long, your brain will pay the price with its cells because there's no cause for them to hang around. Join a book club, teach yourself how to knit or get to your nearest scuba diving center and take lessons. You'll be learning new things and be keeping your brain strong.

3. Choose sensible foods. The effects of unhealthy heating won't cease at negatively affecting your heart. If a food is bad for one part of your body, it will impact all the others as well. Certain foods reduce the strength of the arteries leading to your brain, which can cause strokes. Eating heart-healthy foods is in almost every case without exception helpful for your brain as well. Give up the fast food and opt for any number of healthy alternatives.

4. Get rid of your life's stress-sources. It's naive to totally eliminate stress from your life. In truth, some stress can even help you. Everyone is born with the flight or flight response ability to ensure our safety. Imagine that you're a caveman and someone attempted to take your freshly killed mammoth (this may be chronologically inaccurate or be completely impossible, but let's overlook that for now), you would have to defend yourself to maintain your food. However, if a saber tooth tiger (again, unsure of the accuracy) wished to make you its next meal, you would have to flee (flight). The stress that can wear on your body and your mind with time is sourced from large-scale happenings or more common, background worry. Using meditation is an excellent method to get away from harmful stress. If you are unsure or new to meditation, many guided meditation CDs may be helpful.
