24 Ways to Reuse Your Plastic Bags

by Mark Etinger

Plastic bags. We all have them. In their ubiquity, there must be something better for them to do than sit, or go straight into the trash. It’s easy to collect them by placing them in a sack that hangs on the back of your pantry door, or in a cupboard. Then, when you need them, you know where they are. These tips will help you allow your bags to function in more than one way – and when you’re done with that, you can reuse them again.

1. Save cash by using plastic bags as garbage bags.

2. Carry them with you on a trip to place your dirty clothes in.

3. Use them to carry wet swim suits when leaving the beach or pool.

4. Keep them in your car as trash bags, or in the glove compartment, just in case someone gets sick.

5. Pick up after walking the dog with them.

6. Bring them to the grocery to reuse.

7. Donate them to non-profit organizations.

8. Tuck them into your kids’ boots during the winter to keep their feet drier.

9. At the grocery store, put items that should be stored in the fridge immediately in paper bags – they’ll stay colder longer, and when you get home, you’ll know which bags to empty first.

10. Recycle them!

11. Make them into knee pads for when you’re in the garden.

12. If you’re in the middle of a paint job, and want to take a break, wrapping your brushes will keep them moist for about a day.

13. As a rain hat.

14. Triple wrap a gift in colorful plastic bags, and tie all the handles together. Then cut the handles at the top for a colorful fray.

15. As an umbrella wrapper.

16. Shoe protectors if you run outside in slippers. Be careful on slippery surfaces; the bags have no traction.

17. As planter fillers, just be sure to allow room for the drainage hole.

18. If you give your kids ice packs in their lunches, wrap them in plastic bags to prevent condensation puddles from building up on the inside of their lunchboxes.

19. Wrap your Christmas decorations in plastic bags for protection.

20. Defrost meat with a paper towel in the plastic bag.

21. You can crochet them together to make a super bag

22. Or a dress, from the dozens of tutorials on the internet.

23. Make musical instruments out of them by rubbing them back and forth

24. Organizing things around the house – you can even color coordinate!

These tips should help you get started with reusing your plastic bags. Reusing your bags will make you feel like you’re doing more to help the environment, and making more use out of what you have. All kinds of bags have a place in your home as a transformed entity. If you have any other ideas, feel free to try them!
