Let It Go

by Nikki Willhite

Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by all the things I need or want to do. I do not have the time, or the energy, to do all of them. On a "bad day" I feel like throwing my hands up in the air, and just doing nothing.

I have tried doing a little bit of everything each day. As the day goes on, I find I am moving faster and faster, trying to work everything in. Eventually I become stressed. Stress is the last thing I want in my life. A dirty house won't kill you, but stress will.

So what do you do when there is not enough time for your "wants" and "needs"? This may not be the answer you want to hear, but you have to let things go.

This can be a very difficult thing to do if all the things you do in your free time (such as when you are not at work) are important or meaningful to you.

You must seriously think about what you do, why you do it, why it is important to you, and how much you enjoy doing it.

To begin, get out a paper and pencil. Start by writing down all of your activities. Then, over the course of about a week, write down what you did, why you did it, and how it made you feel.

At the end of a week look at your list. Categorize your activities. Some of them may have been time spent with your children, or taking them to activities. Other time may have been spent with friends, on hobbies, or at meetings or taking classes.

The first thing to look for is balance. If you are spending all your time driving your children from one activity to another, you might want to think about limiting their activities or finding a way for others to help.

On the other hand, if you are away from you home and family a great deal, you may want to scale back on activities outside the home.

Another area that should not be neglected is relaxation. Are you taking enough time for yourself? Are you getting enough rest?

There are a lot of things that I enjoy doing that I just don't have time for anymore. I love to knit, but I can't remember the last time I had my knitting needles in my hands.  Just writing about it is making me want to go to the store and touch the yarn!

I've heard it said that "Women can do it all, but not at the same time."  There is a time and a season for everything. Do what is right for this time in your life. Don't try and do it all at once, or you will ruin your health.

Use your time and energy well. If you have allocated 4 hours a week to community service, don't budge from that number.

Remember to enjoy what you do. Sometimes it is not what you do, but how you do it. Sometimes you can make less enjoyable activates more fun if you just do them either at a different time of day, or in a different way.

Stop and think; then go.
