Make and Sell on eBay

Do What You Love for a Living

by Amanda O'Brien

There is no rule written in stone that we have to hate our jobs, and yet if you asked most people if they enjoy their 9 - 5 routines they would instantly say no. You don't have to join them, because if you have a creative talent today you could soon make and sell on eBay for more profit than you thought possible!

When most people think of eBay businesses, they think of buying products from a retailer, be it a wholesaler or a car boot sale, and selling it on through the internet auction website. This sometimes puts people off as they assume that an expert knowledge in marketing is required, or at the very least the ability to source a great product. While there is certainly money to be made in this buying and selling of other people's wares, and you certainly don't need to be an expert to take advantage of it, have you ever considered that you could make and sell on eBay yourself?

If you have a creative talent then you can make and sell on eBay. It doesn't matter if your talent is cooking, knitting or crafting homemade birthday cards; there is likely to be a demand for your services. Can you write? Sell your articles. Can you cook? Sell your recipes. The sky is the limit! But before you get carried away, keep reading...

You must make a profit

You would be amazed how many aspiring entrepreneurs start out with a great idea, but soon end up making a loss on each product that they sell. For example, if you decide to carefully craft birthday cards to sell on the internet auction website, you need to ensure that the cost of the materials, along with the time it takes you to create your design, is less than the price that you ask for it. Remember that buying in bulk can often reduce your overheads if you are planning to make a lot of the same item.

You must ensure that safety is maintained

If you choose to sell your delicious homemade fudge on eBay, or any other type of food, it is absolutely essential that you are careful to handle materials in a sanitary fashion and follow all the food hygiene rules and certifications. You can guarantee that reports of food poisoning would feed back to your potential customers, costing you your online business for a moment of carelessness.

You must create a quality product

Before investing a lot of money in materials it is important that you are sure that your product will sell. Here are a couple of ways that you can use to go about ensuring that you have a quality product to make and sell on eBay:

- Make a few and distribute to friends and family to get some opinions. Go to people that you know will be honest, not those that will only tell you what you want to hear.

- Create a small selection of your item to trial on eBay itself before committing to creating larger quantities of goods. This small test will help you to know if your product will sell, and for how much.
