Music and the Heart
by Nikki Willhite
Music is powerful. Music influences us more than we know. It
gets into places in our heart that nothing else can reach.
Our day-to-day thoughts are affected by the music that we
listen to. Our thoughts affect our behavior, and our behavior
forms our character.
If we want to change, and become a different person, we need to
change our music. It is as simple as that.
One of my favorite stories about the power of music comes from
World War II. A young man, named Helmut Hubner, lived in
Hamburg, Germany. When the Nazi's took over Germany, he started
his own resistance movement. Long story short, he was eventually
taken prisoner, and at the age of 17, he was executed by the
Nazi regime.
Helmut had involved a couple friends in his effort to let the people
of Germany know what was happening. They went to prison and were
tortured, but escaped death.
As with many people who survived years in prison, and all the
horrors of Nazi imprisonment and Gestapo interrogation, these
young boys had a lot of inner strength.
So what finally brought one of them to tear? It was music.
When the Nazis took over Germany, the music of Mendelssohn was
forbidden. This is because Mendelssohn was a Jewish composer.
Several years after the war, one of these young boys, now in America,
attended a concert featuring the music of Mendelssohn. As the music
began, it seeped into his heart, and finally.... finally he broke down and just
wept.
Such is the power of music. Music gets in. Be careful what music
you let into your heart.
