It you have the land, one of the most frugal ways to save money on nuts is to plant a nut tree.  Check with your nursery to see which varieties do well in your area, and if you need to plant a second tree for pollination.  Nut trees grow very large and take a few years to produce, but it is well worth the wait.

When you buy nuts, you will save a lot of money buying them in larger containers.  Costco usually carries several kinds of nuts.  Sometimes you can find them at a farmer's market.

When you bake with nuts, use fewer of them and cut them up smaller.

If you find a big sale on nuts, you can stock up, and put them in the freezer.

Here are a couple good recipes for nuts:

Homemade Toffee

1 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Butter a 9-inch square pan.  Evenly distributed the chopped nuts along the bottom of the pan.

Next put the butter and the brown sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil.  Stirring constantly, boil for 8 minutes.

Remove from heat, and pour over the nuts in the pan.  Then add the chocolate chips on top and let them melt by covering the pan to retain heat.

When the chocolate is melted, even out with a knife.

Cut squares while still warm, and then refrigerate.

Rocky Road Candy

3 cups chocolate chips
2 cups miniature marshmallows
1 cup walnuts, chopped

Melt chocolate over low heat.  When chocolate is melted, spread 1/3 of it in the bottom of an 8x8 dish, lined with aluminum foil.

Mix the marshmallows and nuts and spread over the chocolate.  Then take the remaining chocolate and spread it on the top.  Stir slightly so that all the marshmallows and nuts are covered.

Let sit until firm.
