Organizing Your Closet
by Nikki Willhite
It always makes life easier to be organized. The more "stuff" you
have, the harder it is to keep it clean and organized. That is one reason why
simple living is so appealing.
First it was too many clothes, then came the monster closets (see
Closets and
Caverns) , and now we have the extravagant closet systems.
Have you seen the prices of closet systems? They are outrageous.
I think we all have gone out and bought a wire rack or two to add to our
closet space, but now that is considered inferior. We must upgrade to a solid
wood shelving system or our closets are hopelessly outdated and inferior.
What is it going to be next? Seriously.....how much more
ornate can we make our closets? More to the point - why are we doing it?
The state of the economy, along with the accompanying job
uncertainty at the time of this writing (2010) has caused people to start
saving money again.
The last thing we need to spend our money on is storage for
clothes, probably in excess of our needs.
I love organization. I would never discourage anyone from
being organized. I do discourage spending outrageous sums of money for
that purpose. We can keep our closets perfectly organized with items that are
either free, or can be purchased at minimal cost.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR FRUGAL CLOSET ORGANIZATION
- Plastic boxes, baskets and cardboard boxes all do the same
thing. They keep similar items together and make them easily accessible. Use
what you have, or purchase inexpensive, versatile storage pieces.
- Use a small chest of drawers in your closet if space permits. Thrift stores are a great place to find boxes and bins, as well
as small furniture pieces such as drawers and trunks. Anything made of wood can
be painted and will look much better when you get it home.
- Look for containers that can be stacked to save space.
- Use empty suitcases as storage containers.
- Use inexpensive cardboard drawers.
- Use cereal boxes to neatly snack smaller items.
- Hang a double rod in your closet for your clothes. If you have
a lot of long items, you will need to leave a place to hang them. If the only
long items you have are your bathrobes, just use hooks.
- Hang your scarves in the plastic holes from soda can holders.
- Use hooks or nails to hand up hats, robes, or anything you
grab on a regular basis.
Use your resources wisely, and remember what is important in
life. Don't waste either your time or your money glorifying that which is
of little worth.
