How to Care for Pleated Clothing
by Nikki Willhite
There was a time when everyone had a pleated wool plaid skirt in
their closet. While that is no more the case, pleats are a classic detail in
clothing, and they aren't going anywhere.
Pleats are popular because they are very comfortable to wear. You
may have to take tiny steps in a pencil skirt, but you can jump hurdles in a
pleated skirt!
Pleats are not limited to skirts. They are show up on the bodices
of blouses, as well as the shirt tails.
One thing that has not changed about pleats is that they are hard
to care for.
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO HELP YOU WASH AND PRESS PLEATED CLOTHING
Washing
- Always wash pleated clothing inside out.
- Remove pleated clothing from the washing machine while still
slightly damp. Try and avoid the final spin.
- Hang to dry.
Ironing
- Use spray starch on pleats before ironing them.
- Press pleats on top of a piece of sandpaper. The sandpaper will
help hold them in place so you can iron the pleats accurately.
- To keep the lines of the top please from forming creases on the
fabric that is underneath, use paper bag strips between the layers of the pleats
when pressing down with the iron.
Pleats can be stylish and fun. If you want to buy a garment with
pleats, it may not cost you any extra money, but be aware that it will take a
little more work to keep the garment looking good.
