Save money running your refrigerator by keeping the coils clean and maintaining a proper seal on the door.  Seals dry out over time.  It the seal isn't good, cool air will escape.  Test the seal on your refrigerator by closing a dollar bill on it.  If you can pull out the bill, the seal is no longer working properly and should be replaced.

Vacuum the coils on a regular basis so the refrigerator will operate at maximum efficiency.  If the coils are on the back of the unit, put sliders under the legs so that it will be easy to pull out from the wall.

Here are some additional frugal tips to save money on refrigerators.

- Don't buy a larger refrigerator than you need.
- Buy a higher priced energy star rating refrigerator only when it is worth the savings.
- Go white.  Find someone who is remodeling their kitchen to stainless steel, and get a great deal on their old refrigerator.
- Keep your refrigerator out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
- If you have an older refrigerator that works well, but you don't like the color, think about having it sprayed.
