Bargain shopping has taken a turn for the better in the last few years. No
longer is the dumpster the "place of choice" to find free things.
If you've ever put anything up on Craig's list in the free category, you know
that it only takes minutes before the phone starts ringing. If you don't remove
the item after the first few minutes, your phone will continue to ring all day.
There is always someone who wants what you want to give away. It can actually be
quite convenient for large items that you want to dispose of, and can't easily
do any other way.
Many people have issues with dumpster diving, and it does have issues. See
Dumpster Diving
Ebay has a lot of safeguards, but you are still taking some risk in not being
able to see the items before you purchase them, and trusting that they will
reach you.
That is where Craig's list shines. You
can see and touch the merchandise you want to purchase, and you don't have to
wait for it.
However, there are still risks. In our area, someone was recently murdered by
people pretending to want to purchase something they put up for sale on Craig's
list.
Life is full of risks, but statistically Craig's list is very safe, and it has
helped many people.
Here are some tips for making good use of Craig's list and protecting yourself.
- Never put your address in your ad. Always talk to a potential buyer on the
phone first.
- Trust you instincts. If you don't like the sound of someone's voice, do not
let them come to your house or agree to meet them somewhere.
- Do not allow someone to come to your home if you are alone.
- Evaluate each situation. They are all different. I recently sold a piano on
Craig's list. I could tell from the questions that were asked me about my piano
if the buyers were truly interested in buying a piano.
My husband was traveling a lot at the time, and I knew that everyone who came to
see the piano would spend at least 30 minutes playing it. So I let them come.
- If you are selling a small item of value, that could easily be taken by force,
meet the prospective buyer in a public place and do not go alone.
- If you must go alone, bring a cell phone, and tell a friend or neighbor where
you are going.
- Do not meet anyone after dark.
Craig's list has helped many, many people; both buyers and sellers, Take a few
precautions, but make use of this great frugal shopping tool.
