Sell and Clear the Clutter

by Nikki Willhite

How many of us have items in our home that are no longer serving us? There are many reasons why our homes are often full of things that we are no longer using.

Nothing ever stays the same. Kids outgrow clothing, we lose interest or can no longer do some of our leisure activities, people give us things we really don't need or use, and so forth.

Whether it is clothing or small household items, things that just sit in our home taking up space and collecting dust are just clutter. We should get rid of them.

We have three choices when it comes to getting rid of unused items in our homes. We can toss them in the trash, give them to charity, or try and sell them.

Only the last two choices are good. It is wasteful to throw items away that others may be able to use.

Giving items to charity can give you a really good feeling.

However if you need the money, selling your unused items may be the better choice for your family. Dave Ramsey is always saying that if you are strapped for money, ebay should be your new best friend.

We are not limited to ebay either. We now have Craig's list, and Amazon.

I love Craig's list because you can list your items without cost, and there are no fees involved when you sell your items. Just be sure that you put up really good pictures of your items, and that you are careful who you let into your home.

Amazon will let you sell things like books. There is no charge to put your items up for sale. You are only charged a fee if they sell.

We were quite shocked a few years ago when we found out that we had an out-of-print book that was selling for over $50.00. It wasn't even a great book. I could have easily given it away.

Look around on Amazon and check out some of the books you no longer want to see if there are other sellers listing them and see how much money they are asking for them.

Ebay now lets you list items for free if the starting price is .99 cents or less. You still have to pay money if your item sells, but this is an improvement in their fee structure.

If you have anything vintage, check out the competition. That is where you will make the most amount of money.

Look at the competition for the items you want to sell. Anyone can make money on ebay, if you are willing to do the work. Some people make money buying items at garage sales and thrift stores, and then reselling them on ebay.

People like bargains. Grouped items, like several pieces of children's clothing, or a collection of 5-6 old VHS tapes, sell better than a single item.

If you have a talent in a craft area, make something that can be used as a present or stocking stuffer. There are some very talented crafters on ebay. They become well-known, and it becomes very difficult to win the bidding wars over their items.

Clear the clutter in your home, and put a little money in your pocket.
