Seriously Saving Money on Clothing
by Nikki Willhite
Are You Using Your Wardrobe Budget Wisely? Have you ever opened the door to a
closet full of clothing and said "I have nothing to wear"? If so, you are
wasting money with your clothing selections.
For reasons I won't go into in this article, I had to replace almost every item
in my closet last year. Thankfully, I already had a clothing strategy. I made my
selections carefully, and now my closet seems to have more clothing
possibilities than I will ever be able to wear. Best of all, it didn't
take much money.
My philosophy is simple, and highly effective. Buy all your clothing in
separates, wearing neutral colors on the lower half of your body. If you are
wearing a neutral color with your pants and skirts, you should be able to wear
them with almost all of your blouses, sweaters and jackets.
Throw in a couple pair of jeans, some active wear, a pair of sandals and boots,
and you can mix-and- match and find something for almost every occasion.
Here are a few more tips to make smart buying decision.
- Don't buy anything that isn't very comfortable, and never compromise. Most
people wear 20% of their clothing 80% of the time. We always reach for the
things we like the best. If you buy something because "It's not bad", or only
slightly uncomfortable, you probably won't wear it.
One way to face reality about which clothes you wear the most is to turn all the
hangers in your closet backwards. After you wear an item of clothing, turn the
hangers around the right way. Check the hangers after six months and see which
items you are really wearing.
- Spend more money on the neutral items you purchase, including your jackets.
Buy them with classic lines, and you can wear them for years. You can replace
blouses and sweaters with new fashion colors without spending a lot of money.
- Buy clothing to suit your lifestyle. If you are a stay-at-home mom, your
closet should reflect it with more casual clothing. If you work in an office,
you should have more office wear.

If you follow these rules, you will not be saying "I have nothing to wear." You
will see how "Less is more", and will be much happier with your frugal, smart
wardrobe.
