Toilets

Save money by checking your toilets on a regular basis to make sure they are not leaking. Thrift and vigilant home maintenance go hand-in-hand.  Catch small problems before they cause big problems, and expensive damage.

To check for water leaks in your toilet, put some food dye in the tank above the toilet seat.  Come back in 30 minutes and look in to the toilet bowl.  If your toilet has a leak, some of the color from the food dye will be in the water.  You can fix this problem by replacing the flushing mechanism.

Here are some additional frugal tips to save money on toilets.

- Check the floor around the toilet to make sure it is dry.  If water is seeping out from under the toilet, the wax ring needs to be replaced, or the toilet isn't installed properly.

- Buy an energy efficient low water usage toilet to save on energy costs.

- Never flush sanitary products or you will end up calling the plumber.
