Tactile Quilts for the Blind

by Nikki Willhite

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be blind? I think at some point in our lives, we've all thought about it.

I can't imagine a world without color and pattern. I entered a world of color, design and pattern when I pursued my degree in Interior Design. Now I do a lot of quilting, and one of the thing I enjoy the most is putting the different colors together and seeing how they play off each other.

Every quilter makes quilts for other people, which usually includes charity quilts. There are dozens of charities which accept quilts.

When we make quilt for children, we like to make them out of bright primary colors, and with fun, whimsical patterns.

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF MAKING A QUILT FOR A BLIND CHILD?

The colors and patterns on a quilt for a child who is blind are not important. What is important is the texture or raised designs on the quilt.  You want quilts to be warm and snuggly,  but for a blind child you want them rich with texture and interesting things to feel.

These quilts are called tactile quilts, and they are needed and collected by The Foundation for Blind Children.

Imagine how you would feel if you were blind and someone placed a quilt over your lap. You would run your fingers over the top of the quilt to see what you could feel. Think of the different textures you could make the squares. Think of how chenille feels, or corduroy, terry cloth, velvet, fleece and all the other wonderful fabrics we have today.

If you've ever wanted to do a charity project, check out the above link.  There are instructions for making a very easy tactile quilt-  just 6 squares across and 6 squares down, as well as other small projects and ways you can help.

Even if you are not a quilter, you can do this. Have some fun and do a good thing for someone less fortunate. Make your heart sing.
