Teachings  from the Life and Example of Jesus Christ

 by Nikki Willhite

This Sunday Christians around the world will be thinking about Jesus Christ and the Resurrection.  As Christians, we have a profound reference for what He did for us while on this earth. We also value all of the things He taught us. Not to be overlooked, however, are the things that we can learn from the example He set for us with the way He lived His life.

As with most teachings, some of the most powerful things we learn are by example. Our Savior taught us many things by the way He led His life.

Here are four things that Jesus taught by the way He lived His life that are very meaningful to me - Compassion, Humility, Forgiveness, and Faith.

COMPASSION

As Jesus moved from town to town, he was very mindful of those who were sick. If the sick did not come to Him, He asked for them to be brought to Him. He used His healing power to cure the blind, raise the dead, and heal the lepers.  Jesus commanded us to love our neighbors, and that is how He lived His life.

HUMILITY

After Christ performed many of His miracles, often people  wanted to fall down and worship Him. Jesus always deflected any glory to Himself, and told people to glorify the Father in Heaven, who had given Him these gifts. We too should be thankful for our special gifts, but remember that they are gifts, and use them with humility and for good.

FORGIVENESS

Jesus forgave freely, as was evidenced by His telling the woman at the well to "Go, and sin no more",  as well as  asking the Father to forgive the Roman soldiers who carried out His execution.  How easily so many of us get offended.  We need to learn to forgive others freely, of both real and imagined injury.

FAITH

I do not believe that the crucifixion was something that was easily done by Jesus. He was half mortal. Not only was the physical pain beyond comprehension, but taking on all the sins of the world was a spiritual burden I cannot comprehend. Perhaps He thought His Father might stop the crucifixion, as God had stayed the hand of Abraham from offering his son Isaac up as a sacrifice. Surely some of these concerns were evidenced with His prayer in the garden of Gethsemane when He prayed to the Father that "If it be Thy will, let this cup pass from me, .....nevertheless Thy will be done."

This shows me that Jesus must have had to have faith to finish His mission here on earth. When he stepped out of the Garden of Gethsemane, He was ready for what lay ahead.  I know that I, too, cannot life my life without faith and prayer.

The teachings of Jesus are words that we treasure. The example of His life- even more of a treasure.
