I love my Amazon Kindle electronic reader. Yes, it was
expensive. However, in my case, it gave me back something I had lost- the
pleasure of getting lost in a good book.
My eyes have never been
very good, and with age they have gotten worse. With the Kindle I am able
to both enlarge the font so reading is easier as well as turn on the sound and
let it read to me when my eyes are very tired. The only thing that would
make reading easier is if the screen had lights at the back of it.
Having said that, there is one problem with the Kindle, and that is the power
cord. If the battery on the Kindle gets low, you attach the power cord to
recharge it, and you can keep on reading. A few nights ago I put my Kindle
down after finishing reading, and my husband walked into the room. He
looked at my Kindle and noticed that the rubber had come off the wire for a good
inch or more right next to the plug.
I was stunned. I
couldn't believe I didn't notice it. I had been reading with that Kindle
plugged in and those wires were right next to me. My husband immediately
took the cord to the garage and wrapped it in electrical tape. "Good as
new," he said, after a few comments about how I shouldn't pull on cords to
remove them from electric sockets. "I don't think so!" was my reply, on
both counts.
So I got on the Internet, and started Googling the Kindle power
cord. Turns out many people have experienced the same problem. The
rubber literally unravels from the wires. It is a known problem, which is
mentioned by several people on Amazon's own pages where they sell replacement
Kindle power cords.
I also saw in the comments that Amazon is
sending replacement power cords out for the cost of shipping. Better than
nothing....but I don't understand why Amazon doesn't issue a recall. Shame
on them for that.
So I called and my new cord is now on the way.
Love the Kindle, but very disappointed with the danger of the power cord.
Kindle users- be aware of your cord and the potential of electric shock.
And when you think a product is defective, even if it is not
under warranty, do your homework and save your money.
