The Benefits of Cork Flooring
by Nikki Willhite
Recycling and living green are very popular right now. Anything
that you can put into your home that is easily
replenishable , is very
popular.
When we think of popular green housing products, most of us think
of bamboo.
However, next in line would have to be cork. It takes about 25
years for a cork tree to grow large enough to harvest the bark for the first
time. Then it is a 9 year wait to strip the bark over a 150-200 year life of the
tree.
For the trivia buff, most cork is harvested in Portugal, from
trees as old as 200 years.
Since cork is just harvested and made from the bark of the tree,
as opposed to cutting the tree down, this product is considered green.
Cork has been used for many things over the years. It has been
put in bottles, on bulletin boards, used in the fishing industry, and now it is
being used on floors.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES OF CORK FLOORS
- Cork has a wonderful resilient quality. It is
easy on the feet, which it has become a flooring product.
- You can purchase cork in different colors and
patterns. It is very durable. Most people think of cork as being a soft material
but it is actually very hard and can last for a hundred years.
- It is also hard to damage. There is a lot of
air in cork, so it absorbs water, and is a good choice for kitchens.
- It absorbs sound.
- If it gets damaged, it is easily repaired.
- It repels bugs.
- It will not rot.
- It is fire resistant
