The
Best Christmas Gift
by Nikki Willhite
I have to admit, when I watch television, I
rarely watch commercials. I developed this talent when I was in college and had
some extremely boring professors. I learned to let my mind go elsewhere, while
appearing to be attentively listening to what they were saying.
If you were to watch me while I was watching
television, you would catch me doing the same thing. During commercials I start
thinking of other things, and usually don’t hear a word. This amazes my husband,
who can’t seem to grasp how I do it.
Recently, however, a commercial got my
attention. It affected me emotionally, and reminded me of one of the best things
about Christmas.
You have probably seen this commercial. I
don’t watch much television, so if I’ve seen it, it must run a lot. It is a
commercial for a major retail store. Here is how it goes.
A young lady is talking on the phone to her
family right before Christmas. She is obviously living away from her family and
missing them. She is sad that she won’t be with them for the holidays.
I believe she is talking to her mother, who
asks her if she has received the presents that were sent to her.
The young lady responds that she hasn’t, and
the mother expresses concern that they should have arrived by now. She suggests
that she check her doorstep.
At this point, the young lady opens her front
door, and there is her family on her doorstep, come to celebrate the Christmas
season with her.
This is where I get emotionally affected.
What a surprise! This never happened to me, but can imagine how wonderful it
would be.
After this point, the commercial becomes
meaningless. There is an attempt to show the joy of sharing of presents, but it
falls flat! The best gift has already been given.
So once again I am reminded that the best
Christmas gifts are not the ones you buy in the store. Money can’t buy them.
They are gifts of love, family, time spent together, and a child born in a
manger, many years ago,
