The New Frugal Chic

by Nikki Willhite

Move over shabby chic. There is a new chic in town!

Have you noticed how the word frugal is now in style? You hear stores marketing new lines of products as frugal. You hear stylistic forms of the word frugal, such as frugalista.

How does frugal chic differ from shabby chic? Simply put, you don't have to be shabby to be frugal.

You can find items that look brand new, and they are chic if you bought them on sale or at a low or bargain price.

You can still use time-worn furniture to decorate your home, but it will not be antiques or have come with a high price tag.

Those who are savvy enough to make do with items that cost less are now considered clever.

Flea markets, yard sales, anywhere you can find a bargain is the place to shop.

No one is turning up their nose at the 10-year old car sitting in your driveway that is providing you economical transportation.

Even kids are coming to understand the value of money, and accept hand-me-downs and used clothing without as much complaint.

Times have been tough. Many people have lost their jobs. Those who are still working are experiencing pay cuts, loss of the match on their 401K investments, and, I have to say, abuse from demanding employers who know that no matter how hard their employees have to work, they will not quit.

For many workers, and our house has one of them, the 40 hour work week is now a joke.

All of these things have caused people to look back over their spending habits the last few decades and wish that they would have saved money. Had they been frugal, they would have had savings.

Then they might have been able to hold on to their houses, not be caught with high credit card balances when interest rates soared, or even retired from jobs when those jobs became intolerable.

Unfortunately, we can't go back and redo the time we lost as far as the savings. We can only change what lies ahead.  When it comes to money, it is never too late.

To all those now on the frugal train, I say "Welcome aboard".
