In Search of Thrift Store Bargains

by Nikki Willhite

I love thrift store shopping. I admit that most of the things you find in thrift stores can be "less than desirable."  However, there are good buys if you can find them. It is the "thrill of the hunt"  that I enjoy.  You have to block out all the junk, and look for that hidden piece of "treasure."

When I can find something I need, at a fraction of the retail cost, I feel a sense of accomplishment.

There are some tips to make finding bargains at thrift stores easier. You need to be prepared. The last thing you want to do it buy items that you really don't need, or are the wrong size.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR THOSE OF YOU IN SEARCH OF BARGAINS

- Keep a list of all the items you would like to have if you can find them at the right price. This includes everything from books and picture frames, to linens and clothing.

- Be realistic about which items are safe to buy used. Things with motors or electronics are risky.

- Keep an updated list of the sizes of all family members, as well as color preferences for both clothing and household items.

- Carry a cardboard cutout of shoe sizes.

- Your mind cannot retain color. If there is something you want to match, carry a sample of it with you. If you can't snip a thread or cut a swatch, use a paint chip sample that you've taken home and matched as closely as possible. Don't try to do it by memory. It will not work.

- Always save receipts and do not hesitate to take items back if they do not work for you.

- Carry a tape measure with you and double check everything. Mine is part of my key chain.

- Make friends with the sales staff, and find out the time of day when the largest amount of new merchandise is put out on the floor.

- Most thrift stores have sales. Some are quarterly, but others put certain items on sale different days of the week. Find out the schedule, and shop on the best days for your needs.

There are great bargains to be had at thrift stores. It takes a little work to find them, but it is well worth it.
