Save money on water by doing simple things like always running full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher. Some people in dessert areas route the hoses of their washing machines to the outside so they can reuse that water.

Keep an eye on your water meter.  If a pipe breaks between your home and the front of the street, you are responsible for the lost water.  You could be charged hundreds of dollars.  All plumbing eventually fails, and it is not covered by insurance.  Insurance companies do not cover your plumbing.  You must do the maintenance and be mindful of what is happening with the water coming in and out of your home.

Here are some additional frugal tips to save money on water.

- Turn the water pressure down in your children's bathroom, and they will use less water.

- Watch for leaks in your plumbing, which not only run up your water bill, but lead to mold
and mildew.

- Landscape with plants that don't need much water in arid regions.

- Use drip irrigation in gardens.
