Sometimes life just hurts. Have you ever felt you were drowning
and without hope? Has someone you thought would help you seen you in trouble and just rowed right by? Perhaps they even stood up and used
their
oar as a 2x4 and slammed it in your face before they left.
Life can be hard, and people can hurt you on many levels. It is hard for me to
imagine the pain and suffering some people have endured. There
is an article on Frugal Happy Families
about Brigadier General
Robinson Risner called
Powerful Hope.
It is an incredible story, from the life of an incredible man. When I look at
his picture, I can see a softness in his face that only comes
from humility and the power to endure.
There is so much heartbreak in this world - death, illness, pain, separation from those
we love, natural disasters and their consequences .... and the list
goes on and on.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT?
I was such an admirer of Princess Diana. In spite of great
sorrow in her personal life, she genuinely cared about other people. She
put her problems aside, and went places other people feared to go. When she met with those
who were suffering, her counsel was to "Think happy thoughts."
The movie "The Sound of Music" (1965) had Julie Andrew singing a
song that has become a classic- "My Favorite Things." In the lyrics of
the song, she
replaces all the things that bother her with things
that make her happy and bring her joy.
Everything has an opposite, whether it is good and evil, happy or
sad, rich, poor, etc.
YOU HAVE THE POWER.
You can dwell on the bad things that make you sad, or you can
replace sad thoughts with happier ones.
I've had my share of sorrow in this life. I know what it is like
to suffer and be hurt by the cruelty of other people. Yet, I know that I have
not suffered nearly so much as other people.
I think of our Savior and what He did for us. Do you think it
was easy for Him? When he went into the Garden of Gethsemane, he
prayed...."Father, if Thou art willing, remove this cup from me."
Perhaps he thought the Lord would stay the hands of the Roman soldiers. He
knew that God had stopped Abraham from killing Isaac at the last minute.
The Savior is my example. When He came out of the Garden of Gethsemane, He was ready
for what lay ahead. He had found peace in His prayer to His Father.
Life is not going to get any easier for most of us as we get older. Not only
does advanced age bring problems, but our
circle of love keeps expanding with the birth of children and grandchildren.
While this is a good thing, when those we love suffer, we do also.
What gets me through the day is knowing that God is not frowning. He knows the
end from the beginning. He knows that it is but a small time that we pass
through sorrow, and then our work is done.
Hold on to your faith, call on your Heavenly Father in prayer for help, and
think happy thoughts.
Life is tough.... but you can still be happy.
